Membership

Membership in the Utah Society of the War of 1812 honors the service of those who defended the United States during America’s second war for independence.

If you have a War of 1812 ancestor, you may qualify for membership—and you don’t need to have all the genealogical work completed before contacting us.

Who Can Join?

Membership is generally available to males age 14 or older who can document descent from someone who provided qualifying service during the War of 1812 era.

Qualifying service includes service in the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Revenue Marine, state militia, certain privateer and maritime service, and several other qualifying positions.

Not sure whether your ancestor qualifies? That’s exactly what our Registrar can help you determine.

What Will I Need?

You’ll need to document the family line connecting you to your War of 1812 ancestor. Records might include birth, marriage and death records, census records, military records and other genealogical sources.

You don’t need to figure this out by yourself. Our Registrar can review what you already know and help determine the next steps.

Types of Membership

Lineal Membership — For a direct descendant of a qualifying War of 1812 participant.

Collateral Membership — In certain circumstances, membership may be possible through the brother or sister of a qualifying participant when there is no eligible lineal descendant.

Junior Membership — Available under Society rules for younger qualifying descendants.

Ready to Get Started?

You don’t need a completed application—or even a fully documented family tree—to contact us.
